  • Remote Accessibility to Diabetes Management and Therapy in Operational healthcare Networks (EU FP7, 2011–2014)

    Applied Logic Laboratory continues research in the field of the diabetes with 15 international partners. The aim of project which started in 2010 is to develop an integrated long term management of diabetes. The system with the help of clinical monitoring and intervention strategies connects the following parts of diabetes care:

    • continuous blood glucose monitoring,
    • monitoring and predicting related disease indicators,
    • education on lifestyle factors such as obesity and exercise,
    • automated closed-loop delivery of insulin.

    The communication platform of the project called REACTION is built on an interoperable peer-to-peer service oriented architecture (SOA). All functionalities, including devices, are represented as services and applications consisting of a series of services orchestrated to perform a desired workflow.

    The intelligent interoperable platform developed by REACTION will provide integrated, professional, management and therapy services to the diabetic patients and other actors of the care across Europe in different healthcare regimes. Some of these services are:

    • professional decision support for in-hospital environment
    • safety monitoring for dosage and compliance
    • long term management of outpatients in clinical schemes
    • care of acute diabetic conditions and
    • support for self management and life-style changes for diabetic patients.

  • Model-Based Semantic Search System (Hungary, 2010–2012)

    The objective is to develop a technology to perform meaning-based search for natural language texts. The query is not a Boolean combination of terms (keywords), but well-formed sentences of a controlled natural language. The search engine searches for phrases in the documents, which may have the same meaning as some sentences of the query. The relevance of the results depends on the measure of the fit between the meaning of the query and the phrases found in the document.

    The process of search comprises the following steps: meaning representation of the query is generated, a keyword based presearch selects candidates for the semantic search, text sections of documents are parsed controlled by meaning representation, and the relevance of the section to the query is determined.

    Both linguistic and shallow word knowledge is represented in a semantic lexicon. The main difference from the similar solutions is that we do not intend to use great domain ontologies. However, the upper level of the semantic lexicon consists of small ontology segments („ontology islands”) that provide basic schemas for the representation of events in some topics and contexts. The characterisation of the meanings of words and phrases depends on the corresponding ontology island. The structure of the semantic lexicon provides a side effect, namely it helps the topical and contextual annotation of texts.

    The search is language independent, since the meaning representation is language independent. So a query in English may produce results in several languages. However, the linguistic resources, first of all, the corresponding semantic lexicon, have to be worked out for each language.

  • Enabling Access to Sound Archives through Integration, Enrichment and Retrieval (EU FP6, 2006–2008)

    The FP6 project EASAIER developed a state-of-the-art system for archiving audio and related materials, as well as web-access and enriched access stand alone client. Many digital sound archives still suffer from tremendous problems concerning access. Materials are often in different formats, with related media in separate collections, and with non-standard, specialist, incomplete or even erroneous metadata. Thus, the end user is unable to discover the full value of the archived material.

    EASAIER addresses these issues with the development of an innovative remote access system which extends beyond standard content management and retrieval systems. The EASAIER system has been designed with sound archives, libraries, museums, broadcast archives, and music schools in mind. However, the tools may be used by anyone interested in accessing archived material; amateur or professional, regardless of the material involved. Furthermore, it enriches the access experience enabling the user to experiment with the materials in exciting new ways. The system features include enhanced cross media retrieval functionality, multi-media synchronisation, audio and video processing, and analysis and visualisation tools, all combined within a single user configurable interface.

  • Intelligent modular open source Platform for intercultural and cross-domain SME Networks (EU FP6, 2006-2009)

    Growing demand for development of products of higher quality and variety in an international environment characterized by fierce competition has put in particular SMEs in front of a number of significant challenges such as: how best to design and innovate, how to understand constantly shifting customer needs, how to produce the products that meet those needs within tight budget and time constraints. Forming international networks through co-operation between companies (virtual organisations) of different engineering domains has become an important business strategy for SMEs to respond to these challenges. This brings about the prospect of ad hoc integration of systems across organisational boundaries to support collaborations that may last for a single transaction or evolve dynamically over many years. The dynamic character of the collaboration sets new requirements for scalability, responsiveness and adaptability that necessitate the on-demand creation and self-management of dynamically evolving virtual organisations spanning national and enterprise borders, where the participating entities (enterprises or individuals) pool resources, information and knowledge in order to achieve common objectives.

    ImportNET will be a radical invention in the area of cross-enterprise interoperability between proprietary systems and cooperation across engineering domains through the ontology based sharing of knowledge. The project aims to promote breakthrough research and technological developments on “Providing an open-source environment and operative models for digital business ecosystems for SMEs”. The development of an open source semantic integration framework aims to facilitate an affordable cross-organisational co-operation for SMEs and will operate in dynamically changing work environments. The framework forms the basis for an open and participatory environment that offers various applications to support the set-up of and work in networked organisations.

  • Network-centric Middleware for GrOup communication and Resource Sharing across Heterogeneous Embedded Systems (EU FP6, 2006–2009)

    MORE is a European research project focussing on the development of a Network-centric Middleware for GrOup communication and Resource Sharing across Heterogeneous Embedded Systems: MORE will implement new technology to facilitate communication and distributed intelligence across groups of users using different wireless standards.

    MORE will address the problem of how the interaction between humans and embedded systems can be efficiently supported by developing a system that can be tailored to the specific needs of diverse organisations. Central to the project is the design of a middleware that hides the complexity of the underlying heterogeneity of embedded systems through providing simplified APIs and management mechanisms for the future operators of these systems.
